This is such a fun series, and I'm using the audiobook to help a friend's daughter's reading comprehension. Tuesdays at the Castle gets the series started with a bang. The voices the narrator uses are very nicely done and add to the characters. Just a lot of fun overall and adding to our enjoyment of this classic story. Everyone in our family loves the castle, which stands in as a full character in the story. The deus ex machina is offset by the vulnerablities of the castle, and its interactions with the chilren. Very enjoyable series.

Tuesdays at the Castle Jessica Day George 9781599906447 Books Reviews

I loved it! It's no secret that I love middle grade fantasy, but really, who can blame me? Jessica Day George really shines in this genre. She creates a unique setting for her book, realistic and lovable characters, and the appropriate amount of suspense for her audience.

The main character, Celie, is the perfect heroine and a wonderful role model for young girls. She is spunky, intelligent, independent, and fiercely loyal. When things fall apart, she takes matters into her own hands and doesn't sit around waiting for someone else to solve the problem. Highly recommended for girls and boys that like fantasy or fairy tales.

How many shades of adorable can one book be? Holy awesome! Tuesdays at the Castle is about young Celie and her castle, a castle that just so happens to be a little temperamental and adds new rooms to itself when it gets bored and shuts other rooms up when it decides the occupant has overstayed his welcome. When Celie's parents fail to return from a trip and strangers come into the castle to try to take over, Celie and her brother and sister are willing to do whatever it takes to protect their territory. Celie is a strong resourceful young character who is lovable and charming. Her brother and sister are great cohorts, but the real star of the book (besides Celie of course) is the castle itself. Loved the castle and wish I had one just like it. The story is filled with all kinds of fun, and a delightful cast that made me stop several times while I was reading to comment to my husband how much I was stinking loving this book.
My daughter is nine and enjoyed the young courageous hero.
I on the other hand had to read through horribly structured conversations and awkwardly framed descriptions. And every chapter held compounding plot holes that even my daughter found confusing.
Since my daughter liked it I'm sure I'll have to read more of the series. Hopefully the author will learn to write.
I stumbled across this book one day when it was offered at a discount, but my 5 star rating would apply even if I had paid full price. My daughter and I read most of the book together (I missed a chapter or two when she decided to read on ahead.)
We just loved the concept of the castle as a character.
We also loved the human characters, especially Celie.
My only complaint is now we have to wait until spring to read another book by this author. She has other books, but they are for an older age group (teens, I think?), and this is her first book for the younger set. Fortunately, the book coming out in the spring is a sequel to this one. We did discover the author had a link to a "gift" holiday short story (from her fb page) which I will read this week, but it'll still be a long wait for that sequel!
I read this aloud to my seven year old daughter, and her older brothers enjoyed listening in as well. We all enjoyed it, it's a cute little story with a creative premise.

Just a couple of niggling plot irks my kids questioned (hopefully spoiler-safe)

- If the castle had spit out kitchen maids it didn't like, why wouldn't it spit out the conniving folks with the nefarious plans?

- We would have liked to have seen more action with the awesome map the princess was making. It felt built up, but not used as much as it could have been.

- The title had us thinking Tuesdays would come into play in the story line more, and it really didn't.

Still, all three kids still gave it six thumbs up, we liked the action hear the end, and the resourceful princesses. Cute story!
I would give this book ten stars if I could.

This confident, pitch-perfect narrative does what it sets out to do, creating a magical castle inhabited by real people who face a real crisis, and then bringing the crisis to a successful conclusion. I hope this is a standalone novel, because I believe there is nothing left to be said about Castle Glower. "Tuesdays at the Castle" joins "The Search for Delicious" and "Half Magic" in the category of classy classics for pre-teens.

Celie is a fine heroine, smart and caring and brave. She is a good character for girls to identify with, and I think boys will manage to get over any "Yuck, a princess book" qualms and enjoy her story too.

When I started to read "Tuesdays at the Castle," I worried that it would be too similar to another recent girl-in-a-changing-castle book, "Flora Segunda" by Wilce. Luckily, the books start with a similar idea but go in completely different directions. (Watch out for those old stuffed animals, though!) The Flora books are for a somewhat older group of readers, but are also excellent.
Got this as a gift for my daughter - she is 10 and was able to read it without issues - she was always excited to update me on what was happening to her favorite characters. Didn’t read it myself but she got through it relatively quickly so a comfortable read for a young but independent reader - I got this book for her after we finished the Land of Stories
Series by Chris Colfer, if you’re familiar with those. She wants the next one ASAP so I’m going to recommend this on her behalf*
