I liked this one less than book one - the writing is still there, but the story is missing - there is movement for characters and they 'do' stuff and they 'go' places, but they do not grow and they do not evolve, and there is most definitely NOT an ending here either - this is poorly labeled as a trilogy when it is really one long epic novel broken into three books, and it is not that great overall - 10 plot lines, and I Lem about half of them because I am bored with the lack of progress and the constant need to talk about everything without doing anything - this is such a huge disappointment from a very good author

Mad Ship Liveship Traders Robin Hobb 9780006498865 Books Reviews

Book 2 in this series reinforced the idea for me that Hobb has no qualms with really putting her characters through some hardships. It seems like every time I think that things are really going to have to turn around, she manages to squeeze a little more pain into their lives. Sometimes knowing what could have been if only things had just gone a little differently is agonizing. I would characterize this style of writing as very dark in that nothing is sacred and I just can't help but mourn for these characters sometimes as I watch their lives and the world they know get torn from them piece by piece in the most agonizing ways. I have found that of the 5 Hobb books I have read so far, there really isn't a happy ending as such, just character growth and development and the tendency to either be crushed by destiny or to fulfill it.
I came to The Liveship Trilogy from the Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies. This is actually a sidestep between those two that takes place in the same world but in another region. Only one character from the other two trilogies is involved in this story yet all of it weaves together to form a 9 book series. If I had not had the luxury of choosing to skip from Farseer to Tawny Man in order to stay with Fitz Chivalry I would have read everything in sequence......which I now see is the best way though not essential. Hobb has skillfully written the trilogies so that you need not venture to the Liveship series in order to maintain continuity. Having initially skipped to Tawny Man I did not feel anything was missing. Enough information was provided to fill any potential gaps. However, this is not to suggest that anything in the Liveship trilogy is not worth reading. This series stands on its own as well as fits together with the other two. It is an emotionally gripping tale full of characters you will learn to love. Fortunately this one ends leaving room to continue in a future story. Where Tawny picks up and ends does not define where Liveship could go. I do not regret the order I read them in because I needed to stay with Fitz Chivalry's story at the time. The design of each tolerates such a sequence. But Ideally, do yourself a favor and read the sequence in order from Farseer to Liveship to Tawny Man so you can gain the most from this wonderful tale.
This is the second book of the Liveship Traders saga. In consequence, you know what the story is about because you must have read the first one so I won't bother explaining the plot.
What I can tell is that I spent many hours reading it. It brought me back to the good old days when I was not reading books only when I was on the toilet seat. It brought me back to pick it up as soon as I had 10 mn to spare and spend hours upon hours reading.
I think it is the best book of this saga.
I love Robin Hobb's books and the Liveship Traders is my favorite collection. I have read the assassin series and other works, but the Liveships are the best - both for the story line itself as well as the well-developed characters that evolve from book 1 to book 3. I don't want to share any surprises (spoilers) so I won't mention the plot much other than to say that it is satisfyingly complex without being too complex. Part mystery. Part fantasy. Part alternative society. You will become so totally immersed in this saga, you may find it difficult to put down without finishing. This is the second time I have read the series (I was shocked that it was no longer in the local library) and was pleased to find it on . Thank you, second hand book dealers.
