Robert B. Parker had the touch like no other author I've ever read, having the skill to pull readers into his well-crafted subject content, humor, warmth, intelligence and great fun. Reading his books is on par with any other guilty pleasure, one that you think about and can't wait to get to. I read every book he wrote, and now am repeating that glorious process, one book at a time. I read other authors in between, then can't wait to return to his place, the place where I know I'll love the atmosphere, the people and the place that makes me so happy. Miss you like you can't believe Robert. One added note for this particular novel - parenting is one difficult job. Sadly, many people become parents who truly should not be. This is a job that takes a lot of training. Early Autumn delivers, on a silver platter, step by step advice for raising a teenager who is having a problem acclimating to the tough work of growing up. This book should be required reading for parents of that type of teen.Tags : Early Autumn (Spenser) [Robert B. Parker's Spenser character always entertains and inspires. This book centers on a young boy who has fallen between the cracks and Spenser's quest to give the kid a foundation on which he could build a new and productive life. Too bad he had to battle with the worthless parents to do it! I'd recommend this book to anyone, if not for the profanity. Because of that, I'll have to be more careful. I think it would have possessed the same amount of edginess and grit without this degree of foul language. Still, if you ignore that one aspect, the book is a great read.
Most of Parker's books are fun reads. The main characters change very little and are predictable, but this , to me, makes them always enjoyable.Just wish Robt. B. could have stayed around a while longer. Though, pretty good, the books written after he died just aren't at the same
level of enjoyment. Always wished Parker had put together a Spencer cook book before he left. Some of those recipes looked really tasty !
Many of the incidents in this book remind me of events in my life. I wish i had handled them as weii as Spencer. The story is about a kid who is not wanted by his parents. He is a tool used by the parents to satisfy their on needs. Spencer recognize the needs of the boy and he tries to help him. Susan plays the little jealous jewish princess but Spencer overcomes it all. Not much violence but a lot of learning in this book.
One of the best of the series. (Along with Catskill Eagle, I think) The core of the story is Spenser mentoring a teenager, Paul Giacomin, whose parents have given him very little in the way of life skills. All the other story elements play off of this. I often recommend this as a starting point in the Spenser series, even though it is not the first.
Spenser's life lessons are real, and relevant. Hawk, Susan and Henry Cimoli all make appearances. I think some of Susan's behavior in this one is a bit out of character for her, but she comes around. With all the "boy becomes man" stuff, there is still a fair amount of action and detecting, and Spenser's rapier wit. Lots of the "Spenserian code of life".
As is usual for Parker, no wasted words. Many authors would need 600 pages to tell this story that Parker tells in less than 250. Highly recommended.
If you are not familiar with Spenser, and want to start, this would be a good place. Catskill Eagle is great, but far enough into the series, that it gives away too much of the earlier novels.
I read the first book in the series and liked it. I can't believe this was written by the same author. It's total rubbish. If salvaging a troubled teenager was this easy, there wouldn't be any troubled teenagers. The first two-thirds of the novel are excerpts from all the '70s psychobabble books that were written. You don't have to actually read it, you've heard it all, cliche after cliche. I just flipped the pages (on , I wouldn't have made it through a regular book) to verify that it was more of the same, and it was, page after page after..... like counting sheep. If Melatonin hasn't worked for your insomnia, you could try this.
I'm a big fan of Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels. Nobody does detective - private eye novels better than Parker. I liked the television show "Spenser For Hire", loosely based on the books, but the books are much better. Most of the main characters are a little different than the TV show, except for Hawk. Avery Brooks nailed it. His Hawk is exactly like Hawk in the novels. I've bought the first 15 from The Godwulf Manuscript through Crimson Joy and have been reading them it order. I'm currently on the 13th, Taming A Sea-Horse, Once you start they are hard to put down. What you might call, "A page turner". Very entertaining.
Patty Giacomin and Mel Giacomin are divorcees who do not get along and they use their son Paul in their nasty battles. Mel takes Paul from Patty and she send in Spencer to get him back. When Mel sends "Friends" to get Paul back, Spenser finds out that Mel is does more than just sell insurance. As for the kid, Spenser takes him to Maine because he wants him to become self-reliant and get away from the nastiness of his parents' hate induced fights.
Spenser tries his hard to help out a kid whose become a pawn in his parents' games while dodging bullets and fighting gangsters. A must read, especially for young adults.
