This book was a fantastic read. I gave it 4 stars because it was longer than expected. She is a great writer and this is the first book I have read that she has written. If it wasn't for the length of the book, it would have been a 5 star read for me. The main characters lead the way for an interesting and great romance.
Daphne and Sylvester met each other and were drawn to each other. Her father blackmailed Sylvester into marrying her, and that led to a very unhappy marriage. So unhappy that she is hoping he’ll divorce her. Meantime he is hoping to get an heir. He is trying to seduce her into love while dealing with lack of trust, honesty and love. Really good story!
I did enjoy this read, but the the progression of the story was a bit odd. Sylvester went from hate to lust in about a minute, so was a bit unbelievable. But then who reads these novels for believability?? I enjoy a story where two damaged people come together to find love. So I was satisfied with the book.
I have read with pleasure many of the novels by this author; however, this one was a disappointment. It was not up to Ms. Reid’s usual good standard. How many times did we need to read, in detail, that the hero was blackmailed into marrying the heroine? How many times did he demonstrate his mistrust? Then finallywith one or two chapters to go, the hero does an about face and is madly in love. Why would you create a heroine who could not resist someone who treats them badly? I was so disappointed, I could not read the last two chapters. Hint to authors If you don’t have a good story, don’t attempt to write just anything. I will hesitate to buy future books from this author.
This story kept me hooked from beginning to end.

Daphne and Sylvester's marriage was forced on them by Daphnes father, who blackmailed Sylvester into the marriage. Daphne doesn't know this until her wedding night when Sylvester tells her.

Sylvester is cold and insensitive to Daphne as he believes that she is a conniving schemer like her father. He turns his attentions to fighting the injustice of slavery in England and Jamaica.

Daphne is a caring, beautiful woman but her husbands cold indifference to her becomes unbearable after six years. Even though she has loved him from the moment she met him she wants a better life than what she has now.

This is a story about learning to trust, forgiveness, love, and willing to take a chance on happiness.
As always with any of Stacy Reid’s stories, I was engaged from the first few pages. It’s a good story, one that is not filled with angst from beginning to end and it has lots of steamy sex with a touch of saltiness. I am enjoying this series immensely and cannot wait to see which characters are up next!
Chapter one starts with, meh, volley between present thoughts and past conversations with others. But hang in there! Story builds momentum and gets better. Kept me riveted until near end, where it backtracked into characters thoughts and pace slowed.
Not as good as first in series but still worth a read. 3.25 stars.
